Whilst the greatest effort has been made to ensure the quality of this text, due to the historical nature of this content, in some rare cases there may be minor issues with legibility. Without entering more fully into the contents of the various chap ters, it may be stated that the work as a whole is designed as a general introduction to the special theory of optical instruments (telescope, microscope, photographic Objective, etc., including also the eye itself). To discuss properly and fully each of these types would require a separate and extensive volume, which I may be induced to undertake at some future time as a sequel to the present work.
