Whilst the greatest effort has been made to ensure the quality of this text, due to the historical nature of this content, in some rare cases there may be minor issues with legibility. I have several times been asked if there was any book on clock making, which, without being encumbered with professional details, would enable a person having a moderate knowledge of mechanical principles to understand the construction of clocks, and the things which chiefly require attention in their making and management. I believe there is no such book. Perhaps the articles in some of the Encyclopaedias might partly answer the purpose; but they are neither accessible to the great majority of readers, nor do they contain some information which may be expected in a rudimentary treatise, though they do contain interesting accounts of some curious inventions, which would be out of place in a merely practical book such as this professes to be.
