Whilst the greatest effort has been made to ensure the quality of this text, due to the historical nature of this content, in some rare cases there may be minor issues with legibility. The following little treatise does not pretend to be scientific, or complete, or classical. 'it merely deals with an interesting subject from a picturesque, histori cal, and (most especially) a local point of view. The study of marbles, as such, would occupy a life-time, and require an efficient training in the principles of geology, mineralogy, and chemistry. I have done little more than give a list, with approximately ac curate names, of the few hundred species which are found in the churches and galleries of Rome; and which invite the attention of the English visitor, first, because they are beautiful; secondly, because of their historical associations; and, thirdly, because they are confined within the space of a few square miles, and may be leisurely examined in the course of an ordinary season.
