Whilst the greatest effort has been made to ensure the quality of this text, due to the historical nature of this content, in some rare cases there may be minor issues with legibility. All steel workers should be able to judge steel as to quality and the amount of carbon it contains. It is just as essential that a steel worker should be a judge of steel as it is that a wood worker should be a judge of wood. One grade of steel is not fit for all purposes any more than one kind of wood is suitable for all pur poses. The more carbon steel contains the harder it is. Ordinary tool steel contains from fifty to one hundred and fifty points of carbon. One point is equal to one hundredth of one per cent; one hundred points is equal to one per cent.
