Whilst the greatest effort has been made to ensure the quality of this text, due to the historical nature of this content, in some rare cases there may be minor issues with legibility. The progress made in widening the use of compressed air as well as cheapening its production by new inventions and new sources of power and transmission since the issue of the first edition has induced the author to add more matter in which some of the later appliances and methods of use are described. The growing importance of the use of compressed air in deep mining, tunnel work, and in the industries has made it a standard element for the transmission of power.
