The Americans have learnt to live with various lobbies and that representing farming does wield a lot of clout and this, one must remember, does not quite emerge from the increasing dominance of the giant corporations. In the Indian context, farmers have always dictated terms, although their power as a major vote bank is not to be confused with a glaring reality of the farm sector - the wanton neglect of the vulnerable segments of the rural masses often leading to suicides and deaths due to sheer impoverishment.
