Whilst the greatest effort has been made to ensure the quality of this text, due to the historical nature of this content, in some rare cases there may be minor issues with legibility. The Translator has altered the arrangement of the chapters from that of the French edition so far as to place the section entitled 'The Author, drawn by Himself' at the end of the book instead of at the beginning. This change has been made in the belief that the section will have greater interest, and perhaps command a more friendly judgment, after the reader has made acquaintance with the author through the channel of his reflections on greater and more impersonal subjects.
