The late Cardinal Vaughan was still Bishop of Salford when he wrote a little pamphlet on the necessity of prayer for the conversion of England; and at the end of his long and intensively active career he seemed to receive still more light, and to understand better that God wanted from him more prayer than activity.<br><br>This little book is full of the same doctrine. It was written some years ago by a Carthusian monk, and many English readers who could appreciate the original, expressed the desire to see it translated, for the benefit of those who cannot read it in French.<br><br>It will be found that the translation has been beautifully and faithfully made, in spite of real difficulties.
