Whilst the greatest effort has been made to ensure the quality of this text, due to the historical nature of this content, in some rare cases there may be minor issues with legibility. Ever that moments of devotion are moments of mental vacancy; the wings on which the spirit soars must always be wings of thought. There fore in every one of these meditations I have tried to express a distinct idea. I have en deavoured to exhibit in their fulness and in their variety the different phases of the spiritual life and the different emotions which are awakened by them. 1 have not sought out these phases I have allowed them to find me. I have come to the task with no previous system in my mind; I have just walked beside the stream and taken my impressions from its windings. The stream by which I have walked is the Bible. I have followed in the order of our books from Genesis.
