The book describes my journey as an artist, through Malaysia and Indonesia. I travelled as a backpacker for 84 days and came home with some 200 drawings in my sketch book, 20 watercolours, 10 portraits of people I met along the way and 1300 slides. The drawings, watercolours and photos are now used as illustrations for the book. The book is built up in such a way that some illustrations can be enlarged by clicking on them or shown as an interactive sequence of pictures. There is also an interesting sound clip recorded at a certain point in the journey. The book contains an account of what it is like to travel as an artist in countries where one seldom sees people sitting drawing in the street. I describe how I paid for my stay in hotels, with my drawings and how I came to paint the portraits of the captains of the ships I sailed with. On my journey I met the Batak and the Miningkabau people on Sumatra as well as the Toraja poeple, with their special burial ceremonies on Sulawesi. I was born in a Polish family, grew up in England, and moved to Denmark in 1980. I have been drawing since I was 4 years old and after going through the education system in England, ended up as a biologist. The combination of biologist and artist enabled me to get my first job in a foreign land. I began in Denmark by illustrating biology books. Next followed teaching in watercolour painting, something which I made use of on my journey. Watercolour painting is still a large part of my life even though I also exhibit akrylic and oil paintings in my gallery on Fur.
